About Susono City

This is an observation of Susono City, Japan, an area currently gaining global attention as the home of Toyota’s “Woven City” project.
This Image was taken with Synspective’s SAR satellite StriX in Sliding Spotlight 2 mode.

Images taken by SAR offer a unique, cloud-penetrating perspective on a landscape where automotive technology meets the traditional Japanese countryside.

These are the points that are specifically interesting in this image:

– A City in Transition: Unlike the sprawling, densely packed older Japanese metropolises like Tokyo or Osaka, Susono City is a very deliberate, localized modernization.

– Contrast of Undeveloped Land: Susono, which names derives from ‘foothill’ in Japanese, is located at the foot of Mt. Fuji. In this image, Mt Fuji is located on the left side of the image. The rough mountainous terrains are highly visible. SAR radar bounces off the complex geometry of trees and hills, creating these brighter, textured areas.

– New Development: In the midst of this rural setting, you can clearly spot the flat, geometric signatures of newly developed zones. This stark contrast highlights Susono’s unique position as a testing ground for next-generation, sustainable urban planning built directly into the natural environment.

– The Circuit of Toyota: You cannot look at this image without immediately noticing the massive, multi-lane oval on the center-left, which is the Circuit of Toyota, part of the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center. Because paved roads are smooth, they act like a mirror to the satellite’s radar. The signal bounces away from the satellite rather than back to it, which is why the test track appears as a clear dark line against the brighter surrounding infrastructure and terrain.

About the observation

This image is taken in Sliding Spotlight 2 Mode

In this mode, the antenna beam is steered during data acquisition to allow a longer observation of a selected area. Because the antenna beam moves at a slower rate, more data is collected. Sliding Spotlight modes are available; one has 0.9 m ground range and 0.9 m azimuth resolution (Sliding Spotlight 1), whereas the other has 0.46 m ground range resolution and 0.5 m azimuth resolution (Sliding Spotlight 2).
